The things I’ve learnt about weight loss by watching how males do it

I’ve always wondered how some people can lose weight without having to count calories, cut sugar, cut carbs and workout like a maniac.

Since watching my boyfriend go about life and continue to lose weight after already losing 20kg and going to a gym where there is a dominance of males it’s become clear that men and woman are very different. Before you start calling me captain obvious, if you really look into it it’s clear that men take a very different approach to weight loss. They seem to be able to swap meals for protein rich foods without anxiety, self pity or any other emotional repercussions. They seem easy going and continue on with their day like not much has changed.
I started watching how they were doing it and some of their tips are worth a try!
SNACKING – I always liked to eat when it was meal times, when it gets to 12.30 – 1pm that means lunch time and so I would eat. Morning tea and afternoon tea time, well I better get out a snack to eat. I would eat because it was meal time whether I was hungry or not. Men seem to just eat when they are hungry. If its 11am and they are on their third snack of the day well then that’s what they have done – no need to call the snack police! Men don’t seem to constantly think about food, it seems odd to be because I would never forget to eat. But eating a few extra snacks during the day isn’t so bad (as long as they are healthy snacks). It’s probably why men don’t seem to get hangry like I do!

TREAT DAYS – I know quite a few guys who have their designated treat days. They have whatever they want as no food is off limit or banished from the treat days and they have it and move on. There’s no guilt or anxiety about what just went into their body. I’ve also noticed that instead of indulging in sweet sugary rich foods they are opting for more real food like bacon and eggs or potatoes. I recently changed a cheat meal to being a burger and chips and guess what? It didn’t change anything. To be honest I actually felt better and less guilty about eating that then I do when I eat ice cream or chocolate.

DONT STRESS – When my boyfriend has a cheat he doesn’t sook about it and then wants to indulge in everything else that’s bad for you because he has slipped up. He seems to just get over it and continues on. There’s no guilt, remorse or opening up the flood gates for more junk. It happened, you get over it.

ENJOY LIFE – I’ve done it myself – many times. I would put off meeting a friend or I wouldn’t stay out as long or arrive late because I was working out, I decided I would eat before I went so I wouldn’t indulge in the food that was going to be at the party. Men seem to have no trouble dropping the gym bag for an after work drink, a weekend boys night eating pizza and drinking beer. They love it and enjoy it. You can’t let life get in the way. It’s what I learnt and gained a new perspective on healthy eating and training. Positive social interactions help keep you healthy. So just enjoy it all.

GET STRONGER – Have you noticed how most woman are all about fitting into a size 8 or 10, or they want that super amazing bikini body? Men want to get bigger muscles and become stronger. The big thing I’ve taken out of this is they want to get stronger. We all know that lifting weights increases muscle and muscle burns fat. So instead of focusing on the number on the scale, the size of clothes you are fitting into, focus on becoming stronger. Can’t do a chin up? Start by trying to do one, then 5, then 10. Using small weights? Try going heavier. The small changes make such a difference and everything else will start falling into place.

  1. Lyndal Elizabeth - this post makes perfect sense! It's not all about the "body beautiful" but "state of mind".
