When it comes to natural remedies, treatments homemade products, I'm pretty much a sucker for anything. So when I kept hearing about oil pulling, the new cool craze I was definitely keen to give it a go.
Oil pulling, also known as 'kavala' or 'gundusha' is an ancient dental technique that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil around your mouth on an empty stomach for about 20 minutes. This action supposedly draws out toxins in your body, primarily to improve your oral health but also to improve your overall health.
The benefits of oil pulling include;
WHITENS TEETH
INCREASES ENERGY
DETOXES THE BODY
REDUCES HEADACHES
IMPROVES ORAL HEALTH
CLEARS SKIN
So firsty, you choose a vegetable oil. I chose coconut oil as most people seem to use that but really you can choose any vegetable oil (olive, coconut, vegetable), take a tablespoon of it and swish it around your mouth for 20 minutes if possible (minimum of 5 minutes). When i say swish, I mean gently push it around your mouth, through your teeth. There's no need to go crazy like mouth wash unless you want a broken jaw. Once the 20 minutes is up spit it out the oil and rinse with water. Finally, brush and floss like normal.
This is how its gone for me;
THE FIRST DAY
I thought a tablespoon was a little much, so i decided a teaspoon was a better idea. The feeling of the slightly hardened and mushy coconut oil was a bit offputting but it quickly melted and was fine. I decided havinv a shower while swishing the oil was the best way to pass the time and keep my mind off it. Turns out this was a good idea. I lasted maybe 10 minutes and couldn't keep it in my mouth any longer. I didnt notice any immediate benefits from the one time but i decided I would persist.
THE SECOND DAY
I was starting to figure out the first part was ok and and I spent the time getting used to the texture, the middle part was ok and if i kept busy in the shower I got used to it. Once the oil doubled in size, which turns out is a sign of the toxins coming out i couldn't handle it anymore and had to spit it out. I lasted 10 minutes again and noticed a very slight whiter shade to my teeth which was great!
THE THIRD DAY
i couldnt do it. I lasted 5 minutes started gagging and couldn't face it anymore. They say to really notice the benefits you have to persist for most days for atleast 2 weeks. So i decided to persist.
THE FIRST WEEK
I got better at keeping the oil in my mouth. I still couldn't face any more than a teaspoon of the coconut oil but i started really notice a difference. My teeth were getting considerably whiter and my skin had a little breakout. I did some googling and it told me these things can happen as the toxins were drawing out of my body.
THE SECOND WEEK
I can pretty much only last between 10-15 minutes, there are days when I have some serious gags going on but most dats are getting better and im getting used to it. I forget some days to do it but again, as long as you do it most days you will notice the benefits.
The most noticable benefits are the whiter teeth, cleaner feeling in your mouth and over your teeth and my skin has really cleared up again.
THE CONCLUSION
Whilst i don't know for sure that oil pulling is really as beneficial as they say (better digestion, reduced infections etc) I've certaintly worked out it doesn't hurt to give it a go and reep the benefits on the surface.
Will i keep going? Probably, I don't see why not. If it keeps whitening my teeth like it has it's already worth it!
